Shanghai General Motors ' (SGM) newly established Southern Vehicle Plant , located at the Shanghai Pudong Jinqiao Production Base , is officially in operation as of today .
The newly built Jinqiao Southern Vehicle Plant covers an area of 246,000 square meters and has three international standard production workshops for vehicle bodies , painting and assembly, as well as an advanced flexible production line, with planned productivity of 160,000 vehicles per annum.
This will provide a strong and powerful guarantee for the implementation of rapid development, acting as a breakthrough in production bottlenecking and an acceleration of SGM's multi-brand strategy.
At the start of initial operation the plant will produce the Buick , but Cadillacs and other types of vehicles will also be produced later on the same production line .
The Jinqiao Southern Vehicle Plant covers a site area of approximately 180,000 square meters ; however, it took just 20 months to build from scratch starting in September 2003, thereby setting a record within the Chinese automotive industry.

Apart from the vehicle body, paint and general assembly workshops, the Southern Plant also has the requisite vehicle body allocation centers, a local power station , IT building, and other facilities .
While the Jinqiao Southern Plant was being built, SGM made a strategic decision to implement SAP 's IS-Auto Information System Project after having seen several demonstrations.
